Swimming Pool Safety Tips

dog in funny floppy hat and sunglasses on chaise lounge by swimming poolThe first day of summer is right around the corner and pool season is already in full swing. Among warm-weather favorites, almost everyone loves swimming. Whether in your own pool at home, community pool, or a pond or lake, water safety is something everyone should be conscious of. Here are a few tips that will keep you safe while enjoying one of summer’s favorite pastimes:

Remember the phrase, “safety in numbers?” It applies here too—always swim with a buddy. Even at home, make sure someone is nearby when you take a dip in your backyard pool.

Supervise children at all times and keep young children within arm’s reach. Do not leave children under the supervision of other children. Have young or inexperience swimmers wear a U.S. approved flotation device.

Establish rules for safety such as no diving in shallow water or above ground pools (they’re not deep enough), stay away from drain covers, no running on the pool deck or apron, etc.

Use a good sunscreen and reapply as necessary.

Make sure the water in your pool is kept clean and clear by circulation and filtration. Maintain appropriate chemical levels through regular testing. This will also help prevent illness such as earaches and rashes.

It’s always good to have someone in the family trained in CPR and other water-related first aid.

Have a phone close by at all times in the event of an emergency. It also helps to have a first aid kid handy.

Above all, enjoy your time in the water and have a safe, fun and festive summer!
